Ethiopian Names
Background
Names are very important in Ethiopian culture. A name gives meaning and significance to each individual. An Ethiopian child usually takes their father's name as a surname (i.e. second or family name) but is always known primarily by their own first name. Traditionaly, parents and children as well as husbands and wives do not share a last name.
An Ethiopian living abroad must first write their name, then their father’s name. Ethiopians commonly give their children Christian names or Biblical names.
